The Tactical Guide: Securing Your C-File

1. What is it?

Your C-File (Claims File) is the master folder the VA keeps on you. It is a massive stack of every service record, medical note, and rating decision in your history.

The VA will already have it. The C&P Examiner will read it. If you don’t have it, you are fighting blind.

2. Why do you need it?

It is the ultimate piece of evidence that can help or hurt your case. Better to know what’s in it than to be blindsided.

  • The “Smoking Gun” (Help): It contains every medical record ever made about you while you were in the military. Like that sick call slip for a “twisted knee” in 1998 – the one that you completely forgot about. That single page can help you win a claim 20 years later.
  • The Landmines (Hurt): It might also contain a medical note from 1999 where you told a doctor “My knees feel fine” or denied they very symptom you’re claimng now. If you know that note exists, you can prepare to explain it. If you don’t, it will sink you.
  • The Code Sheet: It reveals exactly why any previous claims were denied and also lists all of your “static” disabilities.

3. How do you get it?

Getting your C-File takes time (6+ months is standard), so file the request today.

  • Step 1: Download VA Form 20-10206 (Freedom of Information Act Request).
  • Step 2: In Section III, check the box for “Claims File (C-File).”
    • Tactical Tip: Do not ask for “all records.” Just check “Claims File.” Asking for everything forces a massive review that slows the process down.
  • Step 3: Upload it via QuickSubmit (access.va.gov). This is faster than mail or fax.
  • Step 4: Wait for the CD-ROM (yes, a CD) to arrive in the mail.
